Persuasion

  Sophie couldn't sleep.
So begins Roald Dahl's, The BFG.
A brilliant moon beam was slanting through a gap in the curtains. It was shining right onto her pillow.
The other children in the dormitory had been asleep for hours.
Sophie closed her eyes and lay quite still. She tried very hard to doze off.
How many times have I done the same thing?
It was no good. The moon beam was like a silver blade slicing through the room onto her face.
The house was absolutely silent. No voices came up from downstairs. There were no footsteps on the floor above, either.
The window behind the curtain was wide open, but nobody was walking on the sidewalk outside. No cars went by on the street. Not the tiniest sound could be heard anywhere. Sophie had never known such a silence.
Perhaps, she told herself, this was what they called the witching hour.
Roped in yet?
The witching hour, somebody had once whispered to her, was a special moment in the middle of the night when every child and every grown-up was in a deep deep sleep, and all the dark things came out from hiding and had the world to themselves.
Trust me. If you haven't read the book, go do so before you see the movie, which comes out today. This is one movie I'm really excited about seeing!

Ooo, movies... you're speaking my language! I've not read this book, but I keep seeing trailers for the movie. Wasn't sure if I was going to go see this one. The summer blockbuster season is such a busy movie time (which annoys me because that's when I want to be outdoors). But I'm about to head to the lake for the family's annual 4th of July vacation week and haven't picked any books to take with me yet. I'll rustle up a copy of The BFG. Thanks for the suggestion :)

The summer season is busy and if I were a movie-goer, I'd have the same battle. Sadly, I just read a review that didn't praise the movie, so I'm wary. But I think it will be a good outing for the family anyway.

Hope that your vacation is fun and relaxing! Enjoy the books you bought.

You can have plenty of fun even at a bad movie. Reviews don't mean much; there are plenty of movies with bad reviews that I've thoroughly enjoyed. In fact, I quite liked the Percy Jackson movie going experience despite the fact it was not very close to the book. But who can't have a good time on open weekend with a theater filled with kids; the 5 or 6 yr old next to me actually stood up and danced/sang along with the "Poker Face" montage when the gang of heroes were stuck in a Vegas hotel. Not a great movie, I haven't watched it a second time. Still made a great theater experience.
